Why are pandas kept in zoos?

In an ideal world, Pandas would not live in captivity but would be abundant in the wild and have no problems with food, habitat or human interference. However, in the real world, this just isn't possible. Pandas are exceptionally rare animals with only around 1000 living in the wild.
For this reason, there are only relatively few in captivity. One of the main problems with keeping Pandas in captivity is breeding. Very few captive Pandas reproduce successfully. There are around 100 captive Pandas around the world, virtually all in China. Many captive Pandas outside China are gifts from the Chinese government.

What are the advantages/disadvantages?

Zoos do have a positive educational value and for the most part offer as realistic an environment as is possible. Pandas are given trees to climb, water to play in, barrels, balls and climbing frames. They are kept as comfortable as possible whilst offering people the chance to see such rare animals. Some people disagree with keeping Pandas (or animals in general) in captivity. If you have a view, please post it on the message board
